Today’s spotlight is on our interns who have just completed their six-month internship with us. We talked to them about their journey on Site Reliability Engineering and how they feel about working at Deimos.
Ibukun Olatunde, Site Reliability Engineer
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I have been working as a Cloud Support Engineer and also a network engineer before joining Deimos. In my free time, I enjoy reading and watching classic movies.
What made you decide to go into Site Reliability Engineering?
I was working with cloud support and I wanted to work with products in the cloud. SRE gave me an opportunity to fully understand cloud and cloud-native technologies better.
How did you hear about Deimos, and what made you decide to apply as a Deimos Intern?
I first heard about Deimos on LinkedIn and then checked out the website. People also talked a lot about Deimos on Twitter and what a great company it is to work for.
How would you describe the hiring process at Deimos?
It was a great experience. I learnt a lot from my interview with Idowu Emehinola, who was a Site Reliability Engineer at that time.
Tell us about your work at Deimos. How do you feel about working with your team?
My teammates were really great. I had a lot of fun in our SRE meetings. There’s no micromanaging and the team is tightly knitted from management to technical team.

I learnt a lot about working with Kubernetes, and working on client projects.
Do you have any tips for others who are interested in interning at Deimos?
Deimos has a really great work culture, and really amazing people so you’re sure to have a great time working there. You’ll also get to work on tasks to improve your learning of cloud native solutions and also work on client projects that will give you experience working with real world tasks.
Daniel Ademeso, Site Reliability Engineer

I’m an enthusiastic engineer with experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, System Engineering, Cloud Engineering, and SAP Basis.

I have experience with infrastructure engineering, and I was into DevOps with some cloud certifications and other related certifications. I wanted to expand my knowledge of infrastructure and supporting developers.
How did you learn about Deimos, and what made you decide to apply as a Deimos Intern?
I have been in the DevOps space for a while. I had been following Deimos for a year before I had the opportunity to work with the company.
I saw Deimos’ posts on Twitter and LinkedIn, and I decided to apply as an intern because I wanted to learn more about working with more advanced technologies than what I knew. I wanted to have some other experience of training and application of what I have learnt.
How would you describe the hiring process at Deimos?
Overall, the interview process was very nice.
Tell us about your work at Deimos.
My work at Deimos started with working on a few assigned tasks for the first three months of the internship. Afterward, I started working with and shadowing one of the SREs to better understand what an SRE does on a daily basis at Deimos. I learnt so much about Site Reliability Engineering as a whole, and I got to see how other senior engineers work. I worked as an individual, and also with my intern buddies. It was great working with the Deimos team. I had the opportunity to meet with several engineers with various skillsets who were always willing to assist.
How do you feel about working remotely?
I love remote working because it makes me comfortable with fixing issues, and at Deimos, the flexibility of working from home makes my work less stressful.
What inspires you to show up to work every day?
The work culture at Deimos. There is excellent work culture here and a continuous learning-enabled environment.
What skills and technologies have you learnt at Deimos?
I learnt and improved my skills on Bash, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible, GitLab, GitLab CI, GitOps process, Grafana, Prometheus, Elasticsearch, Logstach, Kibana, etc.

I now have better knowledge and application of Kubernetes, and I bagged an Observability and Google Professional Cloud Architect Certification.

Olaniyi Oshunbote, Site Reliability Engineer
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Olaniyi, but there are two of us with the same name in the SRE team so I generally use my nickname, Hulk. I am an SRE Intern who has been learning some high-level stuff and contributing to one or two client projects at Deimos. I enjoy physical activities and endeavour to work out at least 3-4 times a week. I sometimes get distracted and have often found myself losing sleep while learning something new or interesting. I enjoy my alone time but find the prospects of connecting with new people exciting.
What made you decide to go into Site Reliability Engineering?
I enjoy fiddling with computers and understanding how they work, and I find that a role as an SRE helps with feeding this “hobby”. I do enjoy learning new things and consider myself to be an “epistemophile”. Hence, a good reason why I am currently taking a Software Engineering course online.
How did you learn about Deimos, and what made you decide to apply as a Deimos Intern?
I have many old school friends working here, and they have high praise for the culture and work that Deimos does, so it was only normal that I wanted to experience what this felt like. I was not disappointed. It was an absolutely delightful roller-coaster ride through the internship! I loved every bit of it!
How would you describe the hiring process at Deimos?
The application and interview process was awesome and straightforward! I met my manager, Henri, during the interview process and, boy!, is he the best interviewer I have met so far! Really, I had a good time interviewing.
Tell us about your work at Deimos. How do you feel about working remotely?
I generally had tasks to complete that revolved around me learning about new technologies and methodologies for dealing with the various aspects of an SRE role. Also, being the adventurous one, I occasionally jumped in to help with any issue the team was having, even if I had no prior experience with it. I have been tagged the “adrenaline junkie” of my internship group! This was doable because of the blameless culture here! Working remotely has been exciting, and with the pandemic yet to fully wind down, I feel it is much easier to stick to COVID-19 directives in each worker’s respective domicile.
What inspires you to show up to work every day?
Learning! It has to be learning and also knowing that there is a chance I get to help someone with a problem they are facing. And thus, learn something new and exciting from there!
What skills and technologies have you learnt, and what do you aspire to learn after your experience at Deimos?
I learnt a great deal about CI/CD pipelines, containerization, deployment practices, monitoring and observability, Kubernetes, and GCP. I am planning to get a couple of SRE books (hard copies for the experience!) and actively working towards covering most of the recommended readings from Google’s SRE Team and other top SREs who I follow.
What would you say are your current achievements at Deimos?
I got my first ever cloud certification at Deimos! It was awesome! I was so nervous, but the team was very supportive, and I am super grateful for that.
Complete this sentence – My favourite thing about what I do at Deimos is…
Learning! The emphasis is on learning. There are tons of things I didn’t know that the internship fully exposed me to!
Do you have any words for your teammates at Deimos?
Omo! Do you have a word limit because this can be a blog of its own? Every single person on the team at Deimos totally rocks! From the SRE Team to my intern buddies, even the SWE team! David, Henri, Daniel, Ibukun, Manasseh, Praise, Olaniyi, Osamuyi, Long, Oreoluwa, Michael Lawrence, Michael Jozefowicz, Tim, Idowu, Biodun, Olumide, Prosper, Nanya, Sarah, Elizma, etc. Omooo… E plenty and I am really grateful for everyone I came into contact with. Thank you all, beautiful people. It was a truly, TRULY wonderful experience! THANK YOU!
Do you have any tips for others who are interested in interning at Deimos?
Yes! Be awesome because you are coming to meet the most awesome set of people you have ever met! Also, come with a great drive to learn as much as you can because there is a lot to be taught here! Good luck and godspeed!
