OUR APPROACH TO CLOUD MIGRATIONS
Where Do We Even Start?
At Deimos we take a phased approach to cloud migrations, focusing on yielding value as soon in the process as possible.
During the assessment phase, we determine your business’s cloud readiness by using automated tools and manual discovery.
The goal is to identify any risks upfront in order to mitigate them as soon as possible.
The assessment gives us an indication of what your technology landscape looks like, and enables us to provide you with an overall idea of possible value that can be yielded by the cloud migration.
In the planning phase, we take a deep dive into your current technology landscape, which includes identifying vendor-provided software, application dependencies, business owners, and business and technical risks, etc. We expand on the information already collected, with the aim of creating a detailed migration backlog consisting of the migration waves.
Migration candidates are grouped into migration waves, which are in turn assigned to sprints for migration execution. A large migration will have many waves and sprints that will speed up as the migration progresses and experience is gained.
Furthermore, the planning phase is aimed at:
- Determining the overall migration strategy.
- Identifying the first mover, a workload that is ideal for migration, has limited dependencies, and can be used to test the migration process.
- Defining a backlog of workloads to be migrated to the cloud
- Choosing the right migration scenario for the various workloads.
- Determining which systems should be migrated together.
- Identifying the skills needed for the migration.
- Outlining any training that may be required.
We perform the migration according to the migration plan and backlog. Cloud migrations are often done iteratively in order to unlock value as early as possible. As we learn more about the current infrastructure, we adjust and update our way of working to take the new learning into account.
The migration backlog will be worked on in sprints, with each sprint aiming to migrate a set of cohesive services. Collectively, these are referred to as a migration wave. Each migration wave is completed holistically before moving onto the next. This includes testing (performance, features, and security) and retiring the legacy workload.
The optimise phase of the migration is focused on ensuring that the migrated workloads are running optimally and adhering to best practices.
This phase may see us refactoring systems to further benefit from the cloud’s flexibility and elasticity. Further security improvements or operational improvements may be completed during the optimisation phase of the migration.
